Excellent concert by Sri O S Thyagarajan with able violin support by Vittal Rangan and excellent mridangam support by B C Manjunath. Thiagu had made impeccable arrangements. A record crowd of over 70 people enjoyed a full 3 hour feast of Thyagaraja vaibhavam from Harikambhoji (Enduku Ni daya) to KHP (Rama nee samanamevaru), Mukhari (Kshinamai) and Kalyani (E tavunnara). Vittal accompanied with his typical sweet bowing and played a great Kalyani alapana and Manjunath accompanied with great manodharma and his tani was impactful. OST did justice to every song and sang a lovely Mukhari and Kalyani. Only two non-Thyagaraja songs were Sriranjani (Kanavendamo) and Sada enna hrudayadalli (Behag). I request Jayan to post the full song list.

A great start to Rasaanveshanam 2016!

Bagyalakshmi Chandrasekharan Veena Recital- An auspicious start to 2015

Rasaanveshanam started off 2015 with a splendid, sedate and sonorous veena recital by the highly acclaimed Vid. Bagyalakshmi Chandrasekhran (Profile http://bit.ly/BhagyaLChVeena ). Schooled in the Mudikondan style and performing for over 50 years, she exudes a quiet confidence as she coaxes very melodious gamakas and song enunciations in a pristine gayaki style. She has no hesitation in taking up difficult ragas or in elaborating famously "vocal" krithis and doing full justice to the song with alapana, niraval and swaras. Her tanam is grand and does full justice to the possibilities of the instrument. Tuned at a not-too-low, not-too-high pitch, the instrument sounds very sweet across octaves. She enjoys playing in mandara sthayi also! At the same time she explored the top Sa in Taara sthayi during Keeravani raga and swaras.

She was ably accompanied by Vid M Gururaj, an artiste in remand for both mridangam and morsing accompaniments. He works at AIR, Bangalore.

At Thiagarajan's elegant residence, in the presence of the Trinity (a lovely painting as a backdrop), we were treated to over 3 hours of great music. The 50-odd rasikas, all evidently keen listeners, had a memorable experience.

Shailesh Ramamurthy Flute Recital- October 19, 2014

Yesterday we featured a flute recital by Vid. Shailesh Ramamurthy accompanied by Vid. Anand Vishwanathan on the violin, and Chi. Akshay Anand on the mridangam. The concert was held in the beautiful residence of Sri Arunachala, next to Olde Bangalore. Thanks to Meenakshi and Arun for their hospitality!
We had a wonderful audience of great rasikas who travelled a big distance in rainy weather to listen to a vidwan who very rarely gives public performances.
Shailesh gave us all the experience of pure flute music dipped in classicism and melody and totally shorn of speed gimmicks. He took us on a journey through profound ragas like Shahana and Todi. He gave us a colourful Mohana Kalyani. He essayed the difficult Sri Vishvanatham in Chaturdasha-ragamalika of Muthuswami Dikshitar. He played a lilting Sarasa Sama Dana and a moving Enna Thavam Shaidanai Yashoda. He played Durga on the long flute and gave us the GNB-popularised Dharma Shravana.
Anand on the violin provided solid accompaniment and came into his own in Mohana Kalyani and Todi.
Akshay played a brilliant tani in Mishra Jhampa Tala after Dachukovalena, and gave impeccable sonorous mridangam accompaniment throughout. The natural acoustics of a mikeless(almost) concert were very enjoyable!
The song list will be appended separately.
Shailesh Ramamurthy is an MTech from IIT Kharagpur, winning the prestigious Dr Shankar Dayal Sharma gold medal. He is an acknowledged expert in signal processing.

Rasaanveshanam #3 Aishwarya Vidhya Raghunath

If you weren't there, this will help you imagine it. Imagine Bangalore in July, with the freshness of rain-soaked trees and cool breeze. Imagine cuckoos and mosquitoes having a ball. Imagine a lovely Sunday before FIFA 2014 final. Head to defence colony in Indiranagar. Enter a flowerbedecked doorway. Immerse yourself in lovely Carnatic music. With the intimacy of a chamber concert and the vibrancy of a rivetting Shahana, Suruti and Todi.

Aishwarya sang very very well, and for over three hours. What an array of delectable compositions delivered with panache.

Thanks Mangala and Karthik!

Viva Rasaanveshanam!

Vid. Ashwin Anand Veena Recital - May 18, 2014

We had a 3:30 hour concert yesterday by Vid Ashwin Anand accompanied by Vid H S Sudheendra- mridangam and Vid Phanindra Bhaskar- Ghatam.

On request, Ashwin also played Ritigowla - Janani ninnuvina. His delicate artistry and fabulous raga delineations on the veena were matched by a highly sensitive and modulated mridangam accompaniment by Vid Sudheendra and appropriate ghatam accompaniment by Phanindra.
The entire concert has been video and audio recorded by me (an amateur effort) thanks to the recorders kindly provided by Lalitharam. Parivadini will upload the concert on You Tube
soon.
